During my time in NYC visiting museums, I found myself sketching art more than I found myself looking at art. I felt the piece better that way…translating the paint strokes into pen marks, layering lines like layering paint. I had a few onlookers here and there, but I was mostly kept to myself. My favorite painters to sketch ended up being Cezanne and Monet, with the occasional Van Gogh; choppy brush strokes, thick texture, and a definitive painting style all made precise, rough, or even quick sketches have their own spark. I felt more connected to the painters and their work sketching than I ever did just looking at the art. It transformed into a truly beautiful dialogue between their work and mine that left and impression on me long after the 5 hours sitting and sketching in the museum.
Connecting to art, feeling it, experiencing it, and truly understanding it is an important part of being and artist and creating your own work. This is one of the keys to my own artistic growth.
I was going to get mad at everyone in my art class for wasting expensive paint but then I got distracted by how pretty it was
I love paintings where the paint is used as more than just color. The texture on this is delicious.
